At the foot of Samgaksan (Bukhansan), the April 19th National Cemetery is the resting place of 224 people who died in the April 19 Revolution of 1960 while standing against the regime that carried out the rigged March 15 election of 1960. A memorial tower honors them. At the center of the tower is an inscription commemorating those who died for justice. The 135,901㎡ cemetery grounds are modestly landscaped with pine, juniper, yew, and maple trees. There is a 1,652.9㎡ memorial hall, and Yuyeongbonganso, which houses memorial portraits, is a traditional Korean wooden building that has been expanded to 330.58㎡. Other features include sculptures such as the Symbolic Gate, Roots of Democracy, and Flame of Justice, along with a pond, a promenade neatly paved with sidewalk blocks, and outdoor benches. In May, when the cherry blossoms bloom, Samgaksan (Bukhansan) seen from the park offers both the warmth of a mother's embrace and a sense of splendor, and the sunset is spectacular.
