Visit details

Gilsangsa is a Jogye Order temple on the slope of Samgaksan in Seongbuk-dong, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul. In 1987 Kim Yeong-han donated about 7,000 pyeong of land and some 40 buildings after being moved by Venerable Beopjeong’s teaching of non-possession. It was registered as Daebopsa in 1995 and founded as Gilsangsa on 14 December 1997. Buildings include Geungnakjeon, Seolbeopjeon, Jijangjeon, a bell pavilion, a Avalokitesvara statue, Gilsang pagoda, a merit stele, and a portrait hall for Beopjeong. Geungnakjeon enshrines Amitabha with Avalokitesvara and Ksitigarbha. Jijangjeon and a dining hall were refurbished in 2005; Seolbeopjeon and the bell pavilion were built in 2008. The Avalokitesvara statue is by sculptor Choi Jong-tae. A portrait hall for Beopjeong’s belongings and books opened in 2013. Education at Seolbeopjeon includes Buddhist college, introductory Buddhism, yoga, sutra copying, and meditation.
