Visit details

Honghwamun is the main gate of Changgyeonggung; the name means spreading harmony. First built with the palace, it burned in the Imjin War and was rebuilt in 1616 (Gwanghaegun 8). It is three bays wide, smaller than Changdeokgung’s five-bay Donhwamun. Yeongjo heard public views on the Gyunyeok tax there in 1750; Jeongjo distributed rice outside the gate in 1795 for Lady Hyegyeong’s 60th birthday. Designated a treasure in 1963, it is a two-story, three-by-two-bay east-facing hall with a trapezoidal hip roof, dapo bracketing, paired doors below, and a boarded upper floor. Roof-ridge sculptures mark the building.
