Horim Museum was founded to inherit and develop national culture, based on cultural heritage and funds contributed by Horim Yun Jang-seop (1922–2016). Yun Jang-seop established the Sungbo Cultural Foundation in July 1981 and then opened Horim Museum in Daechi-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, in October 1982. The museum was later expanded and newly built in Sillim-dong, Gwanak-gu, Seoul, and reopened in May 1999. In June 2009, to come closer to citizens who love culture and the arts, it opened the Sinsa branch inside Horim Art Center in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, an emerging cultural hub.

Horim Museum holds some 20,000 pieces of cultural heritage in ceramics, metal, wood, calligraphy and painting, and books. Of these, 62 items have been designated National Treasures (8) and Treasures (54), and 11 items have been designated Seoul Tangible Cultural Heritage. The museum’s collection is highly regarded for both its range and its quality and serves as important basic material for the study of Korean art history. Since opening, Horim Museum has held exhibitions on a variety of themes based on its high-quality holdings. Through these it has devoted itself to making the beauty and value of Korean art widely known. Building on continued collecting and exhibitions, Horim Museum aims to be a forward-looking cultural space that creates a new art culture.
