Visit details

Jangsu Park, one of the landmarks of the Sinwol-dong area, stretches from “Water Flowing Street” at Sinjeong Intersection to the covered roadway in Sinwol-dong. With a health acupressure path, badminton courts, and other facilities in places, it is a park where walking and exercise can be combined. Haenuri Fountain Plaza on Water Flowing Street is a waterside park that becomes a joyful playground for children in the city and offers a sense of coolness. In the central plaza of Jangsu Park stands a memorial stele for those who served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Following Jangsu Park’s walking path, visitors come to a yeolnyeomun (virtuous woman’s gate). The woman honored by this gate, Lady Yi, was born a cherished daughter of the distinguished Jeonui Yi clan but was widowed young; out of grief for her late husband she refused food and fasted, and she died in her late twenties. Informed of this, the court in 1729 (the 5th year of King Yeongjo’s reign) bestowed a yeolnyeomun with a plaque inscribed “Gate of Lady Yi of Jeonui, wife of student Won Jeong-ik, a woman of virtue,” to honor her high resolve.
