Myeongdong Cathedral, seat of the Seoul Archdiocese, is where the Korean Catholic community first formed and holds relics of martyr saints. It is the first large Gothic church on the Korean Peninsula and Korea’s first parish with a resident priest. Designated a historic site on 22 November 1977, the crypt holds remains of Bishop Imbert, Father Maubant, Father Chastan, and others. Relics of Byeongin martyrs including Bishop Berneux were moved from Yongsan seminary on 10 September 1900, later returned to home sites; in 1926 relics of 79 Gihae and Byeongo martyrs were placed in the crypt and then at a Blessed altar in the left aisle. During the 1950 war occupying forces damaged crypt remains. The cathedral was also a center of democratization under military rule. In 1991 remains were rewrapped, new lead coffins made, sealed in stone, and the crypt given glass doors for pilgrims. Mass and confession are held on weekdays and weekends; non-Catholics may attend.
