Visit details

Culture Station Oil Tank, on Maebongsan near Seoul World Cup Stadium in Mapo-gu, reused the Mapo oil reserve, which the public could not enter. Five tanks built in 1976–78 after the 1973 oil shock held 69.07 million liters, about a month of Seoul’s use, and closed before the 2002 World Cup. A 2013 citizen idea contest turned them into culture tanks. The five tanks became open cultural rooms; T6, made from dismantled tank plates, is a community space. Outdoor areas became a culture yard, and remaining woods were kept with added plants. Markets, exhibitions, performances, and workshops are held.
