Pungnap-dong Earthen Fortification is a flatland fortress of rammed earth from Baekje’s Hanseong period, a wall in the shape of a boat. The western wall along the Hangang has been lost, leaving about 2.7 km, but the original circuit is estimated at 3.7 km—larger and more imposing than Goguryeo’s Gungnaeseong or Silla’s Wolseong. The early wall was 10.8 m high and, after two enlargements, grew into a major fortress as high as 13.3 m. During the great flood of 1925, elite artifacts such as a bronze chodu (tripod vessel) and belt ornaments were unearthed, and the site was identified with Wiryeseong in Hanam. It was designated Joseon Historic Site No. 27 in 1936 and has been protected as a state-designated Historic Site since 1963. Inside, early Baekje road remains, large pit-building sites, tiled-building sites, a building thought to be a shrine, and ritual-related artifacts have been found. Since 2000, preservation and restoration have proceeded in six zones.
