Seosomun Historical Park is a rest space in the city that displays many kinds of trees through all four seasons. It is now a park, but the site was once the “execution ground at the four-way intersection outside Seosomun,” where not only soldiers of the late-Joseon Battle of Seosomun and other social-reform groups but also many Catholics were executed from the Sinyu Persecution through the Byeongin Persecution. Among those executed, 44 became saints, and the site became Korea’s largest Catholic sacred ground.

Above ground the historical park and visitor amenities stand; below are a memorial hall, Sky Plaza, a history museum, education and convenience facilities, and parking. The Martyrs’ Memorial Tower, built in 1984, was kept in place; a plaza was set at the center and the grounds were landscaped as greenery and rest space, with 7,100 trees of 45 species including pine, pin oak, and roses, and 100,000 plants of 33 herbaceous species including irises, pink muhly, and silver grass, turning the site into a healing park.

Basement level 1 holds visitor amenities including a library, seminar rooms, a gift shop, a café, and offices. Basement levels 2 and 3 hold Sky Plaza, the memorial hall, and a history museum of permanent and special galleries. Sky Plaza commemorates those who died for freedom of thought and religion; though underground, the ceiling is open so visitors can see the sky, as the name suggests.

By linking major points such as the museum’s Sky Plaza with the ground above, Seosomun Historical Park symbolically shows the historical justification and weight of the underground cultural space.
