In this Ttukseom area where the Waterworks Museum stands, Ttukdo Water Source Plant No. 1, Korea’s first water-purification plant, was built. On December 9, 1903, the American businessmen C. H. Collbran and H. R. Bostwick received from Emperor Gojong a concession for waterworks facilities and their operation. Korean Water Works Co., which took over the concession in August 1905, began construction in early August 1906 and completed Ttukdo Water Source Plant No. 1 in August 1908. From September 1, 1908, 12,500㎥ of tap water produced by slow filtration was supplied to 125,000 residents inside the Four Gates and in the Yongsan area—the first chapter of Korea’s modern waterworks history.

Part of the Ttukdo water source has become Ttukdo Arisu Water Purification Center, fitted with advanced treatment facilities that still produce and supply tap water around the clock; part has been made into the Waterworks Museum and is used as a hands-on learning venue. The museum introduces many stories of Seoul’s tap water, supplied cleanly and safely from the first plant in 1908 to the present. It conveys how waterworks technology has grown and developed, and it also runs a range of hands-on learning programs on water and the environment.
