Seoul palaces by wheelchair

Gyeongbokgung versus Changdeokgung for a wheelchair day: which official access lines are relatively strong, why the Secret Garden is optional, and why Bukchon is not a palace add-on.

Do not stack palaces

Joseon palaces look close on a map. In a chair they are stone courts, packed earth, and thresholds. A conservative first visit is one palace in the morning, then an indoor museum — see /guides/seoul-1-day-wheelchair-itinerary. This page is the comparison: Gyeongbokgung first, Changdeokgung only if you still have energy and skip the Secret Garden.

Regular closing days differ. Gyeongbokgung is usually closed Tuesdays; Changdeokgung is usually closed Mondays, unless a public holiday moves the rest day. Confirm on royal.khs.go.kr or the palace site before you go. We do not quote ticket prices.

Gyeongbokgung — the realistic first palace

Gyeongbokgung is the Joseon dynasty’s principal palace. Official barrier-free text typically records a ramped main entrance, an accessible restroom, and wheelchair rental. Elevator fields are often empty because most of the visit is outdoors. That is Confirmed building access, not a smooth floor.

Stay on the main axis: Gwanghwamun approach, Geunjeongjeon Hall, Gyeonghoeru views. Skip side halls with stone steps. Companion support on granite and packed earth matters more than the rental-chair sentence. Ask which gate has the ramp — “Gwanghwamun” on a brochure is not always the elevator-friendly door.

Power chairs handle slopes better and still meet thresholds. A solo manual chair should treat inner courtyards as optional. See /guides/power-vs-manual-wheelchair-seoul.

  • Check Tuesday closure and last admission on the palace site
  • Ask which gate has the ramp
  • Identify the accessible restroom on arrival
  • Do not add Changdeokgung and Bukchon on the same morning

Changdeokgung — optional, and skip Huwon

Changdeokgung sits east of Gyeongbokgung and is a UNESCO site. Our place page records the main-gate area as Partial: reachable, with thresholds and packed-earth paths. An accessible restroom is listed. That is not the Secret Garden (Huwon).

The garden is a timed extra ticket and a staff-led route. Slopes, earth, and group pacing are a poor fit for a solo manual chair and often a poor fit for a heavy power chair. If you go at all, treat Injeongmun and the throne-hall precinct as the wheelchair slice — and only after Gyeongbokgung has not already used the day.

Bukchon is not the third palace

Bukchon Hanok Village sits between the two palaces and is photogenic. Official overviews describe dense hanok lanes. Those lanes are often steep, narrow, and uneven. Residents ask for quiet tourism. Visit only with a specific reachable viewpoint confirmed in advance — never because it is “on the way.”

Deoksugung — official notes, no place card yet

We do not yet publish a Deoksugung evidence page. Visit Seoul’s Deoksugung listing flags accessible pathways, parking, restrooms, and wheelchair rental among facilities for disabled visitors. That is a facility checklist, not a measured route. If you are based at City Hall, it is geographically closer than Gyeongbokgung; still confirm surfaces and the Daehanmun approach on the day. Changgyeonggung is omitted here until we have a card.
