Arko Art Center began in 1974 as the Fine Arts Hall under the Korea Culture and Arts Foundation, in the former Deoksu Hospital building in Gwanhun-dong, Jongno-gu. In 1979 it moved into a new building in Marronnier Park designed by the leading Korean architect Kim Swoo-geun, taking on its present form. In 2005, when the foundation became Arts Council Korea (ARKO), it was reborn under its present name, taken from the council’s English abbreviation. Since 2021, under four operating strategies—usefulness, inclusion, collaboration, and sharing—it has presented itself as a platform where research, creation, exhibition, and exchange reinforce one another, and it runs curated shows on social themes and public programs that generate and spread discourse in the visual arts. Together with neighboring Arko Arts Theater, the museum’s red-brick building is a landmark of today’s Daehangno.
