Records say Marananta suffered illness on the way to Baekje and recovered after drinking Umyeonsan water, then built Daeseong Hermitage, said to be the origin of Daeseongsa. Venerable Baek Yongseong, one of the 33 March 1st Movement representatives, resided here and took part as a Buddhist representative. The temple holds a wooden seated Buddha he commissioned, a Seoul Tangible Cultural Heritage.
