Since electric light was first switched on at Gyeongbokgung in 1887, KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation) has stood with the people through Japanese colonial rule, the division of the peninsula, and the tragedy of the Korean War, and has become a central infrastructure industry of Korean society today. Growing steadily even through the turbulent history of the twentieth century, it has been a driving force of national economic development and continues to work without pause out of unlimited responsibility to the national economy and to customers and for the advancement of electric-power culture.
KEPCO built the Electricity Museum to organize and preserve the history of electricity of the past century in a systematic way and to show people the value of electricity and the course of modern scientific progress. The museum is the wish of those in the power industry to pass on a precious electric-power cultural heritage, imbued with their spirit, to later generations.
