Visit details

Heolleung is the twin tomb of Taejong (r. 1400–1418) and Queen Wongyeong Min (1365–1420). From the front, Taejong is on the left (west) and the queen on the right (east). Her tomb was made in 1420 (Sejong 2) with Taejong’s site prepared in advance; his mound was added in 1422. Screen and railing stones carry the twelve animals and vajra motifs. Statues of civil and military officials, horses, lantern, offering stone, posts, sheep, and tigers are doubled, following Goryeo Gongmin and Princess Noguk’s tombs. Two spirit-path steles stand below, one after Taejong’s death and a 1695 replacement. Illeung is the joint tomb of Sunjo (r. 1800–1834) and Queen Sunwon Kim (1789–1857), king on the left and queen on the right from the front. First built near Jangneung in Paju in 1835, it moved here in 1856 (Cheoljong 6) onto the former site of Sejong’s Yeongneung; some stones reused Sejong and Queen Janggyeong’s earlier tombs, as recorded in the relocation uigwe. Two tablets name them as king/queen and later as emperor/empress of Daehan.
