Visit details

Jogyesa is the head temple of the Jogye Order. Its predecessor Gakhwangsa was founded in 1910 in central Jongno. The first-floor Buddhist hall is used for exhibitions; a Buddhist newspaper is issued weekly from the building. A seven-story stone pagoda from 1930 in front of the main hall holds relics brought from Sri Lanka by Venerable Dhammapala in 1914, with stone lanterns on both sides. The bell pavilion has a drum, temple bell, cloud gong, and wooden fish used at morning and evening services.
