The National Intangible Heritage Center was built in 1997 by the Korea Heritage Service to transmit national intangible heritage and is managed and operated by the center. It is a space where holders and groups of national intangible heritage skills and performing arts carry on their transmission activities, offering a meeting place so the public can experience and enjoy Korea’s beautiful traditional culture through traditional performances, exhibitions, and hands-on activities.
The building was constructed by the state to preserve and transmit traditional culture, and nationally designated holders of national intangible heritage are housed there to support transmission training and classes for the general public. Eight performing-arts groups are in residence; centered on the holders, they conduct year-round transmission training and public classes to pass their arts to later generations, and they take part in regular presentation performances and invited performances at home and abroad. Twelve craft workshops are in residence, where holders of intangible heritage craft skills open the making process and finished works to the public and also conduct craft transmission training. Major facilities include Pungnyu Folk Theater and the exhibition spaces Gyeol and Ol, plus seminar rooms, performing-arts practice rooms, and craft training studios to support holders and transmitting craftspeople.
