Seolleung is the royal tomb of King Seongjong, the 9th king of Joseon, and his third queen, Queen Jeonghyeon of the Yun clan. It is a dongwon-igangneung (two mounds on different hills within the same precinct), with one T-shaped shrine (jeongjagak) serving both. When viewed from in front of the shrine, the left hill (west) is Seongjong’s tomb and the right hill (east) is Queen Jeonghyeon’s. Seolleung was built in 1495, the year after Seongjong died in 1494, at Hakdang-ri in Gwangju—the present site. The site had been the burial ground of Grand Prince Gwangpyeong, a son of King Sejong, the 4th king; when Seolleung was laid out, that burial ground was moved to present-day Suseo-dong, Gangnam-gu. After Queen Jeonghyeon died in 1530, her tomb was built on the eastern hill of Seolleung. Together with Jeongneung, Seolleung was opened by Japanese forces during the Imjin War in 1592; the damage reached the royal coffin (jaegung), which was burned, and a second funeral was held in July 1593.

Jeongneung is the royal tomb of King Jungjong, the 11th king of Joseon. Jungjong died in 1544, and in 1545 his tomb was built on the western hill of Huireung, the tomb of his second queen, Queen Janggyeong (the present site of Yereung, King Cheoljong’s tomb, within the West Five Royal Tombs in Goyang), and the name Jeongneung was used together with Huireung. In 1562, however, his third queen, Queen Munjeong, moved the tomb to its present site. Queen Munjeong consulted with Bou, then abbot of Bongeunsa Temple, and relocated Jungjong’s tomb here because she wished to be buried with him. The relocated Jeongneung sat on low ground and often flooded when it rained, so after her death Queen Munjeong was buried not at Jeongneung but at present-day Taereung in Nowon-gu, Seoul. As a result, the tombs of Jungjong and his three queens (Queen Dangyeong, Queen Janggyeong, and Queen Munjeong) all lie separately. Like Seolleung, Jeongneung was opened and the royal coffin burned during the Imjin War in 1592, and a second funeral was held in August 1593.
