The Samseong-dong area of Gangnam, long regarded as a hub of international exchange with the Trade Center established there early on, has served as a window introducing Korea to cutting-edge businesspeople from around the world. From the 1990s, Gangnam's distinctive youth culture also flowed in, and the Trade Center area developed a dual character as both a business venue and a landmark of youth culture.

In 2014, amid the Gangnam Style craze sparked by PSY, the area was designated the Gangnam MICE Special Tourism Zone to strengthen the coexistence of international-exchange business and Hallyu (Korean Wave) culture. Centered on COEX, where exhibitions, conventions, seminars, international trade shows, and conferences continue, the zone organically clusters department stores, hotels, duty-free shops, and the City Airport Terminal, drawing a constant stream of domestic and international visitors. The area has been developed as a Korean Times Square, where visitors can experience holograms and augmented reality using cutting-edge displays and enjoy spectacular media art and advertising on giant LED screens mounted on building facades.
