Maeheon Citizens’ Forest is Korea’s first park to introduce the concept of a forest, a park that forms a dense woodland rarely seen in the city. It was created as a park in 1986 to improve the environment around Yangjae Tollgate, then a gateway to Seoul, ahead of the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Olympics. Some 250,000 trees of 70 species are planted, including pine, zelkova, Korean maple, horse chestnut, and Korean pine. North of Maeheon-ro are the Maeheon Yun Bong-gil Memorial Hall, a floor fountain, and a children’s playground, so many families come with children. The south side has the guerrilla Baekma Unit memorial tower; a memorial tower for Korean Air Flight 858, destroyed by a North Korean terrorist bombing over the Andaman Sea off Myanmar in 1987; a memorial tower erected to comfort victims and families of the 1995 Sampoong Department Store collapse; and a memorial stele for victims of the Umyeonsan landslide. Zone 3 of Maeheon Citizens’ Forest was created by Seocho-gu as a culture-and-arts park, with a play yard, outdoor performance hall, various planned exhibition spaces, a sculpture park, and a meeting plaza. Performances and exhibitions are held here, and it is gaining attention as a new attraction in Seocho-gu, which prides itself as a cultural autonomous district. Each space creates a different atmosphere, and the park is much loved by residents.
