Namdaemun Hairtail Stew Alley formed around 1988, when cheap hairtail was cooked spicy to suit market workers and later became well known. Huirak and Wangseong restaurants first specialized in the dish; nearby shops followed. Owners buy ingredients themselves and make side dishes. Hairtail may come from Yeosu, Jeju, Mokpo, or Busan, and each kitchen’s stew tastes slightly different. It is a lunch stop for nearby office workers and market vendors. Japanese media coverage increased Japanese visitors. Shops that also sell grilled fish are an option for those who find the stew too spicy.
