Sungnyemun, the south gate of the Joseon capital in Namdaemun-ro 4-ga, Jung-gu, is also called Namdaemun. It is Seoul’s oldest surviving wooden building and a national treasure since 20 December 1962, the largest of the four gates, with a vertical name plaque. First built in Taejo 5 (1396), rebuilt February 1398, major repair in Seongjong 10 (1479). In 1907 connected walls were torn down for a Japanese crown prince’s visit. Walls were restored in 2006. A 10 February 2008 fire damaged the first-floor pavilion and destroyed the second; it reopened on 4 May 2013. A rainbow arch sits in a high stone base under a two-story pavilion five bays by two with a ujingak hip-and-gable roof and early-Joseon dapo bracketing. Jibong Yuseol attributes the plaque to Prince Yangnyeong.
