The Newspaper Museum is a place to take in 140 years of Korean newspapers at a glance, from the founding of Hanseong Sunbo (1883), Korea’s first modern newspaper. The Dong-A Ilbo company opened it in 2000, at the turn of the century, to reflect on the history of the Korean press and look ahead through its lessons. Newspaper museums worldwide are few—among them the International Newspaper Museum founded in Aachen, Germany, in 1931; the Newseum in Washington, D.C.; and the Japan Newspaper Museum in Yokohama—and this museum stands as a symbolic counterpart alongside countries with long press histories.

Newspapers are vessels of history; the day’s politics, economy, society, and culture live in them. A museum that gathers the past and present of newspapers, which have risen and fallen with their times, is a compressed historical site. The Newspaper Museum has a historical meaning in surveying Korea’s modern and contemporary history through newspapers, a press-history meaning as a landmark in the development of journalism, and a cultural-history meaning in widening the horizon of Korean museums.
