Jongno-gu has three well-known parks: Tapgol Park, Sajik Park, and Samcheong Park. Sajik Park, totaling 188,710㎡, sits west of the Government Complex and on the southeastern slope of Inwangsan. At its center is Sajikdan Altar (a Historic Site), first built in 1395 by King Taejo Yi Seong-gye together with Jongmyo. In the name Sajik, “sa” is the god of the earth and “jik” is the god of the five grains; Sajikdan is where rites were offered to them to pray for a good harvest. The park has a children’s playground, statues of Yulgok Yi I and Shin Saimdang, an archery range (Hwanghakjeong), and the municipal children’s library; Dangun Shrine and Jongno Library stand nearby. Walking about five minutes up the Inwangsan path beside Sajik Park brings you to the Inwangsan hiking trail.
