Sejong Gallery began in 1961 with an invited exhibition by Kim Heung-soo, a leading figure in Korean art, and has since offered wide and deep chances to appreciate art. In 1992 it reopened in the first-floor lobby of Sejong Hotel, inviting progressive, capable artists and planning and hosting a range of exhibitions. It has also extended the idea of exhibition by turning hotel public spaces and restaurants outside the gallery into galleries, to a good response. As a result it has firmly established itself as a cultural space where collectors, art lovers, and hotel guests from Japan, Europe, the United States, and elsewhere can enjoy art freely.

In 2003, seeking a new high-quality field of art culture, it built a show-window gallery that can be viewed from outside, and in the second half of 2012 a major gallery renewal turned it into a new hotel-style mixed cultural space. In 2013 the basement was remodeled as a gallery and a second gallery opened. Sejong Gallery now comprises the first floor above ground, basement 1, and the show-window gallery, offering a spatial difference from a conventional flat gallery and presenting varied exhibitions suited to each space.
