Visit details

Seolleung holds King Seongjong (9th Joseon king) and third queen Jeonghyeon (Yun). It is a dongwon igangneung: one jeongjagak, mounds on separate hills (west Seongjong, east Jeonghyeon from the hall). Built 1495 after Seongjong died in 1494, on the former grave of Prince Gwangpyeong, later moved to Suseo-dong. Jeonghyeon’s mound was added in 1530. Jeongneung is King Jungjong’s tomb (11th king), first built in 1545 west of Queen Janggyeong’s Huireung, then moved here in 1562 by Queen Munjeong with Bongeunsa abbot Bou so she could be buried with him; flooding later led her to be buried at Taereung instead, so Jungjong and his three queens lie apart. Both Seolleung and Jeongneung were looted in 1592; coffins burned and burials were redone in July and August 1593.
