Seosomun Historic Park is a downtown rest space that was once the execution ground outside Seosomun, used for soldiers of the late-Joseon Seosomun battle and for Catholics from the Sinyu through Byeongin persecutions. Forty-four of those executed are saints, making it Korea’s largest Catholic shrine. Above ground are a historic park and amenities; below are a memorial hall, Sky Plaza, a history museum, education spaces, and parking. A 1984 martyrs’ tower was kept. About 7,100 trees of 45 species and 100,000 plants of 33 species were planted. Basement 1 has a library, seminar room, shop, and cafe; basements 2–3 hold Sky Plaza and exhibition rooms. Open ceilings let visitors see the sky from below.
