Visit details
Taereung is the tomb of Queen Munjeong (1501–1565), third queen of King Jungjong. After she died in 1565 (Myeongjong 20), a site near Jungjong’s Jeongneung was rejected by Myeongjong and the present site named Taereung. She had moved Jungjong’s tomb for geomantic reasons; the new site flooded, so she was not buried with him. The Seonjo Sillok records a failed Japanese looting attempt in 1592. The mound has screen and rail stones; screen stones combine cloud patterns, twelve animals, and earthly-branch characters—a mid-Joseon mix that began here. Stone figures are larger than at many other royal tombs; civil and military officials have earring holes in the earlobes. Jeongjagak was destroyed in the Korean War and restored in 1994. Gangneung holds King Myeongjong (r. 1545–1567) and Queen Insun Sim (1532–1575) as twin mounds in one enclosure (west Myeongjong, east Insun), built east of Taereung in 1567 and completed in 1575. Screen and rail stones link the mounds; stone figures, lantern, altar, and pillar stones stand around, with jeongjagak, stele pavilion, and hongsalmun below.
