Visit details

Unhyeongung is not a palace like Gyeongbokgung but a residence where royal relatives lived; it is a Historic Site in Unni-dong, Jongno-gu. It was the private home of Heungseon Daewongun’s family, and the place where King Gojong was born and raised until he became king. Most of the historic events of late Joseon began here, and many reform and isolationist policies were carried out here, so its historical symbolism is unusual. Representative buildings include Noandang and Norakdang, completed in September 1864, and Irodang, added six years later; there is now one main gate, though there were four at the time. Norakdang is the central building of Unhyeongung and was used mainly for large family events such as sixtieth-birthday celebrations and feasts. Noandang was the sarangchae (men’s quarters) used by the Daewongun. It is a typical Korean-tile house, notable for the delicate, beautiful ends of its eaves.
