Visit details

Bongeunsa is a thousand-year-old temple in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu, in the heart of Seoul. It was founded in 794 by National Preceptor Yeonhwa and was first called Gyeonseongsa. In 1498 Queen Jeonghyeon, consort of King Seongjong, greatly expanded the temple east of Seongjong’s tomb (Seolleung) and changed its name to Bongeunsa. In the Joseon period it was the head temple of Seon (Zen) representing the Jogye Order; in modern times it was the site where Dongguk Yeokgyeongwon was established for sutra translation and the training of disciples. Today Bongeunsa is making new Buddhist history through practice-centered temple operation. Through a range of programs including temple stay, a Buddhist college, and a scripture school, it widely shares high-quality Korean Buddhist culture at home and abroad, and it works to continue the standing of a great urban temple that also practices social welfare.
