Independence Hall in Seodaemun Independence Park reconstructs the Independence Club office demolished under Japanese rule. The building had been Mohwagwan, used to receive Chinese envoys, then taken over by the Independence Club after the Sino-Japanese War. From 1894 Seo Jae-pil and the club renovated it and held debates on independence, rights, and self-strengthening. It was a one-story Korean wooden hall, six bays by four, originally about 350 m southeast. Seoul rebuilt it in 1996: the ground floor holds tablets of martyrs and an exhibition; the basement is for events and storage.
