Seodaemun Prison opened on 21 October 1908 as Gyeongseong Prison under Japanese pressure at the end of the Korean Empire and held independence activists. A new prison in Gongdeok-dong led to the name Seodaemun Prison on 3 September 1912. The site became Seodaemun Independence Park on 15 August 1992.
