Visit details

A park on Namsan’s northeast slope, on the site of Namsoyeong, which guarded the south of the city in King Yeongjo’s reign. After Empress Myeongseong was assassinated at Gyeongbokgung on 20 August 1895, many including Minister of the Royal Household Yi Gyeong-jik and Captain Hong Gye-hun died resisting. Gojong built Jangchungdan shrine in November 1900 and held spring and autumn rites through 1908. The shrine stood where The Shilla Hotel’s guest house is now; it burned in the Korean War and only the stele survived, moved here in 1969. Japan built Bakmunsa and a park on the site in 1919; both were later removed. It became a neighborhood park on 22 September 1984 and part of Namsan Park. Sites include Jangchungdan Stele, Supyogyo, Seungjeongjeon, Gwanseongmyo, Waryongmyo, a March 1st Movement memorial, the Paris letter of Confucian independents, a Manhae Han Yong-un poem stone, and statues of Yu Gwan-sun, Yi Jun, and Kim Yong-hwan.
