Jangchungdan Park is a national park imbued with patriotic loyalty tied to the anti-Japanese struggle. On the northeastern slope of Namsan, the site once held Namsoyeong, which guarded the south of the capital in the reign of King Yeongjo of Joseon.

On August 20, 1895, Empress Myeongseong was assassinated at Gyeongbokgung by Japanese assailants. At that time many officers and soldiers, including Minister of the Royal Household Yi Gyeong-jik and Captain of the Royal Guards Hong Gye-hun, died resisting the Japanese. To console their spirits, Emperor Gojong built a shrine called Jangchungdan in November 1900 and held rites there every spring and autumn until 1908.

Jangchungdan originally stood on the site of today’s state guesthouse of The Shilla Hotel. The shrine was destroyed during the Korean War, and only the stele that had stood at Jangchungdan remained; it was moved to its present location in 1969. In 1919 the Japanese authorities built a temple called Bakmunsa to suppress the national spirit and created a park on the Jangchungdan site; both were removed after liberation.

On September 22, 1984, Jangchungdan Park became a neighborhood park and was absorbed into Namsan Park, a natural park. The remaining area is still called Jangchungdan Park, its former name. The grounds include cultural properties such as the Jangchungdan Stele, Supyogyo Bridge, Seungjeongjeon Hall, Gwanseongmyo Shrine, and Waryongmyo Shrine, as well as a March 1st Movement memorial, the monument to the Korean Confucian scholars’ Paris letter of independence, a poetry stele for Manhae Han Yong-un, and statues of Yu Gwan-sun, Yi Jun, and Kim Yong-hwan.
