Visit details

A statue of King Sejong stands on Gwanghwamun Square on Sejong-ro. Sejong, who acceded and died at Gyeongbokgung, is shown 6.2 m high and 4.3 m wide, seated facing south on a plinth 250 m behind Admiral Yi Sun-sin, holding a book with a milder expression than a stern king. In front are a honcheonui, a rain gauge, and an angbuilgu; a water channel at the edge carries a Joseon timeline. Six columns behind show reliefs of Jiphyeonjeon scholars, the type foundry, the six garrisons, the Tsushima campaign, music, and Seoun-gwan; an entrance in the plinth leads to the Story of King Sejong exhibition. Sejong (r. 1418–1450), third son of Taejong and Queen Wongyeong, named Do, courtesy Wonjeong, married Queen Soheon. He set Confucian government, land-tax law, Hangul, science, arts, and expanded territory.
