Visit details

Daehanmun is the main gate of Deoksugung. The name Daehan means “Hanyang grows great.” Gyeongungung’s original main gate was Inhwamun on the south; the east gate Daeanmun took over as the area around Wongudan became the new city center. The present name was given when the gate was repaired in 1906 (Gwangmu 10). The gate stood about 33 m farther forward until Taepyeongno was widened in the 1970s. Geumcheongyo beyond the gate was excavated and restored in 1986.
