Visit details

Yeonghwiwon is the tomb of Imperial Noble Consort Sunheon Eom, a concubine of Emperor Gojong; Sunginwon is the tomb of Yi Jin, first son of the last crown prince Uimin. Eom’s spirit tablet is in Chilgung, Gungjeong-dong, Jongno-gu. Sunheon (1854–1911), eldest daughter of Eom Jin-sam, entered the palace at eight, served Empress Myeongseong, bore Yeongchinwang in 1897, and was made imperial noble consort in 1903, living in Gyeongseongung. She founded Jinmyeong and Sookmyung girls’ schools and gave 2 million pyeong of land and private funds to Yangjeong School. She died in 1911 at Deoksugung Jikjodang. Yi Jin (1921–1922) was born in Japan, returned briefly, and died suddenly at Deoksugung Seokjojeon the day before going back; Sunjong ordered a generous funeral. Yeonghwiwon follows Joseon won rules with a red-arrow gate, ceremonial hall, stele pavilion, and stone railing. Sunginwon is similar but omits railing and stone sheep, with smaller stones and mound.
