This 900-meter stretch is Korea's first example of comprehensively redesigning an existing road into a pedestrian-centered street, combining a shared pedestrian-and-vehicle roadway with the concept of a greenway—a tree-lined street space full of greenery. Eco-friendly clay blocks were used, and gypsum stone paving (paving stone) was applied to the roadway to secure pedestrians' safe right of way. For rest spaces, 130 trees of three species including zelkova were planted and 20 benches were installed. The project created a historic streetscape linked to nearby Deoksugung Palace and improved the street environment. The romantic Deoksugung Stonewall Walkway is an excellent place for couples to stroll, and with the Seoul Museum of Art and Seoul Museum of History nearby, it also makes a fine cultural walking course.
