Daehanmun (大漢門) is the main gate of Deoksugung Palace; Daehan means "Hanyang will flourish." The original main gate of Gyeongungung Palace was Inhwamun on the south side, but Daeanmun, the east gate, took on the role of the main gate as the area around it, including Hwangudan (the Altar of Heaven), became a new urban center. The present name was given when the gate was repaired in 1906 (the 10th year of Gwangmu). Daehanmun originally stood about 33 meters farther forward, but was moved to its current location in the 1970s when Taepyeong-ro was widened. Geumcheongyo Bridge, which lies beyond Daehanmun, was excavated and restored in 1986.
